First Half Report:
Team Bury commenced their 2018 home campaign with a defeat at the hands off Halstead Town. Which it was the visitors who controlled the game from practically start to finish. The visitors had the first opportunity on three minutes as their number 10 flashed his effort wide of the left post from outside the Bury box. Three minutes later however, it was 0-1 to the visitors, as Harris easily got through on the left side of the box, before the Halstead forward fired home.
Bury did make the odd occasional chance though, one of which came with 13 minutes on the clock, as Last's cross into the box finds a teammate in the box, who heads straight at the 'keeper. A minute later, Halstead responded by firing an effort wide from 20 yards out. Then, on 16 minutes a Halstead cross from the left is headed straight at Goulding by their number 6, only for a free kick to be awarded to Bury, after the same player who headed the ball pushed a Bury defender.
Two minutes later, Halstead had two efforts blocked in quick succession. Before on 22 minutes, a Halstead freekick fell to a teammate two yards out, who slotted home into the bottom left corner only to be ruled out for offside. Three minutes later, Harris is found in the box for Halstead after great buildup play between Shelvis and Brown, whose effort was comfortably gathered by Goulding down to his right. Harris then turned provider on 30 minutes, as he found the visitor's number 11 outside the Bury penalty area, whose effort was deflected behind for a corner off Benham.
Halstead's next chance came on 33 minutes, as their number 7 blazed high and wide over the bar, on the right sideline. Four minutes later, the ever impressive Goulding was forced into another superb save, as the Bury shot-stopper did brilliantly well to palm away a well hit shot from inside the box- only for the rebound to find the back of the net, but was correctly ruled out for offside.
On 38 minutes, Halstead kept up the pressure, as a low cross was blazed across the Bury box from the left, but misses everyone and goes wide. A minute later, Halstead's number 6’s well hit effort from 25-yards out goes narrowly wide of Goulding’s right post.
That was the last major action of note in a first half where Team Bury went into the break a goal down.
Half Time Score: Team Bury 0-1 Halstead Town
Second Half Report:
Halstead Town started the second half, how they finished the first, as they doubled their lead on 46 minutes, as Brown found Harris on the left- before the latter slotted home into the bottom left corner. Which, Halstead nearly added to just two minutes later, as Hampson fired wide from 20-yards out. Halstead went close once again, on 54 minutes, as they thundered an effort against the Bury crossbar, before an almighty scramble in the six yard box saw Goulding gather. Eight minutes later, Bury had a chance when Harry Moore found Hunter on the left inside the box, where the Bury substitute fired his effort straight at the goalkeeper.
Goulding was again called into action on 65 minutes, as the Bury 'keeper made a superb reflex save, from ten yards out, as the onrushing Goulding palmed away superbly. Two minutes later, a dangerous Bury cross in from the left narrowly missed Harry Moore who had slid in at the back post, as Bury searched for a consolation. The next chance also fell to Bury on 71 minutes, as Hunter won the ball in the box with the 'keeper scrambling, saw his close range effort blocked behind for a corner. Five minutes later though, Halstead went close again, as they fired an effort wide.
On 77 minutes Goulding once again kept the score down with another great stop, this time in a one-on-one situation, as the Bury goalie palmed the ball away down to his right from 10 yards out. With ten minutes to go, there was a moment to forget for a Halstead player, as they missed a sitter from close range with the goal gaping with Goulding already committed. Seven minutes later, the Bury goalkeeper made an incredible save from close range, as his strong reflex stop kept the ball in play before his defenders cleared off the line.
However, the Bury goal was found once more late on (3 minutes into added time), as a free-kick was headed home into the near bottom, left, corner.
Halstead Town ran out three goal winners on an afternoon where a Team Bury side with a couple of returning players were outplayed by a strong Halstead performance.
